I went into see Dr. Bednarek for my 39 week check up. Everything was going routine, until we got to the subject of my blood pressure. For the last few weeks my b.p. had been slightly elevated, but being that I am so close to the 40 week mark, Dr. Bednarek thought that it was best to have it checked out.
His first though to prevent pre-eclampsia was to have me do a series of overnight tests and then head down to the hospital OB triage in the morning for an ultrasound... then he left the room for about 20 minutes. I'm thinking to myself "what the heck is taking so long". When he came back he said "Ok, lets scratch that. We are going to induce you, let's just have a baby tonight!". Patiently I waited for him to say April fools! NO? Ok, so lets have a baby! He reserved a room for me, and I was off!
I started calling all my family, and they did the same thing as me. Sorry guys, this is no April fools joke, they want to get labor started and I am ready! I called our doula, Tracey. She had me come over to her house to push on pressure points in my feet to see if maybe labor would start on its own. We giggled like little girls as she pushed down on my feet!
My mom was really distraught by the whole blood pressure thing. She asked that we try acupuncture to induce natural labor and lower my b.p. and to use the hospital as our last resort. Why not give it a try right? I had done the pressure points just an hour before that, so lets give this a try too! We literally drove to the other side of town in rush hour traffic to see her friend Mei Lei. She had me relax and put little needles all over my back, head and feet. I was super calm after I left.
Still, no natural labor had started!
When we got home Jacob and I packed all of our things and realized, we don't have a camera! We discovered our camera was not in working order on Christmas and totally forgot about it. So we rushed over to Target, 15 minutes before they closed, and grabbed the cheapest most reliable camera we could fine. We picked up our doula Tracey and headed to St. Joes.
Here I am feelin' fine after I got the epidural. Natural birth just wasn't for me!
Three suppositories, my water breaking, 2 bags of pitocin, an epidural and 50 minutes of pushing and at the stroke of midnight, I finally heard her sweet cries. 26 hours of labor, oh my!
